Nanango

Friday 11 Jan 2019

Not very far today, first on Kingaroy Cooyar Road, then very quiet little country roads (0 traffic, 1 grader at work) until almost at Nanango. I arrived in town at 9:30. My all time favourite bakery no longer seems to exist, what a disappointment! I was SO looking forward to their apple turnovers, they were the best I’ve ever had, anywhere, ever, period. The newer bakery across the street was okay, the coffee was fine, but the AT was leathery instead of fresh and flaky. Oh well, I may get another chance in Blackbutt, where there is a bakery that has been recommended to me more than once already.

There is free camping behind the RSL Club, although not very charming. Much more interesting is Pioneer Park across the alley from them. There are toilets, picnic shelters and beautiful grass everywhere. Technically probably not allowed to camp here although it does not explicitly state that anywhere, so I’ll set up the tent just before dark and I’ll be gone by 5:30 tomorrow morning again.

I had a great little bag shower under some dense trees, very discreet. It’s amazing how little water you need for a complete rinse off — less than half of my MSR water bag, so about 4 litres only.

The rest of the day I’ll check out the town centre a bit, and spend some leisure time reading in the park.

I’m changing my itinerary a bit: instead of joining the BNT to Benarkin and then BVRT rail trail to Esk I’m taking the backroad to Yarraman and get on the BVRT there. It’s the end/start of the trail.
