St Lawrence

Saturday, 8 Dec 2018

I made it. Almost 70k and a seriously steep climb up the Connors Range and an equally steep decent on the other side, which was obviously much more enjoyable.

Pictures never truly show what it is like, and when I’m pushing my bike uphill at less than 2 kph my odometer doesn’t register the slope. But coming down the other side at 50 – 60 kph it measured up to 20%!

It was drizzling on and off again, very tiresome. At only 21º it is not all that pleasant because you do get totally soaked. So I took shelter beside some big eucalyptus trees. It was mostly dry on top of the range and very pleasant going. Down the other side it started drizzling lightly again but at 26º it was actually enjoyable.

Also saw a couple of snakes, both the same kind, no idea what they are. (not a very clear picture I see now, hopefully I’ll get to see one again)

View towards the coast

I checked in at the St Lawrence campground, which isn’t free any longer, but $10 per night. Still very reasonable. It’s at the community grounds and I set up my tent right inside what is perhaps their ticket booth. Not many people here so I doubt anyone will mind. It’s a bit sheltered from wind and rain. (The St Lawrence Hotel which was charging $20 last time is now up to $65! I decided against that.) But the hotel/tavern also has “Croc o’ Doyle” beer on tap at only $4.50 a schooner. Best price for suds I’ve come across yet. So I’m having a few while editing and uploading my blog posts and waiting until dinner will be served at 18:30.

I think I am taking a rest day tomorrow.

Today’s totals: 69k, 800m uphill, 6 hours riding time

Hi Robert hope you are enjoying your rest day! Kathy is here too now tol the end of January! So we are going to Devon for Christmas and then Ireland for new year and a trip to York planned. So exciting for us . No biking involved at all!
Be safe and enjoy your travels, well done so far. Do you have Christmas cake again for supplies? Cheers Bernie xx
